Digital devices are great, but they can also be really annoying when it comes to writing or drawing. Most of the time you have to rely on your fingertips to do the typing or drawing for you, and what you wanted to write or draw might not come out the way you envisioned.

A new pen called ‘Phree’ aims to change the dependency that most of us have when it comes to writing or drawing in digital form.

The Phee Pen

The Phee pen looks a lot like a regular pen in both size and shape. The difference is that you can use the Phee pen to write on any surface (from a table to a wall), and then project that writing directly to your target device of choice. The creators of Phree, Israeli company OTM Technologies, state that the pen can be projected onto any digital surface from a phone to a watch.

At first thought, it might not make a lot of sense why you’d want a pen like the Phree pen. But after giving it more thought, the reason why this pen might be desirable becomes clear. If you wanted to write out this article, for example, but you don’t want to use the digital keyboard on your tablet you can just use the Phree pen to write it out on a table and then transfer those words directly to your tablet.

A Flawless Idea

Phree is also a great idea because it does more than project your handwriting or drawings onto a digital screen. Phree also translates those words using a multitude of apps including the popular Evernote. So, you can save and share your work using any of the apps that the pen supports. If you don’t have the best handwriting, don’t worry. Phree will also turn your handwriting into Word font, and your drawings will be kept as is.

There are a number of different possibilities when it comes to the Phree pen, and most of them make good sense (as the company explains). You can let your kids use the Phree pen to draw on any surface and then send those drawings to grandparents. Or, you can use the pen if you work in an industry like construction or design, and need a bigger surface to draw on (but still want to send those drawings to a client at a later time).

The First of Its Kind

Phree is the first pen of its kind on the market, and while it might be a niche market for now, it’s also a pen that’s bound to capture the right kind of market attention. OTM has launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund the project, and the company is aiming for $100,000 USD as a main goal. Once the company has raised this amount or more, OTM will sell the pens starting around $200 USD.

While a $200 pen might not be something that you want your kids to play with and lose, it’s a pen that will be extremely versatile for a number of people in various industries. If you want to learn more about Phree, check out the company’s Kickstarter campaign page.
