With all the tablet talk these days, it has become increasingly difficult to find any new devices that aren’t tablet related. Even though tablets rule store shelves with increasing speed, there are some companies creating new products that are entirely innovative. Korean company KT will be shipping a new product called the KT Spider within the next few months. Those who have had a chance to preview the Spider are calling this product slightly odd, but original as they come.

So, what is the KT Spider? A better question would be: what isn’t the KT Spider? Technically, this device is a smartphone, but it’s so much more than that. The KT Spider is also a tablet, laptop, and gaming console. Yep, you read that right. If this sounds a lot like the Motorola Atrix, you aren’t too far off base. The main difference is that the KT Spider promises to be better built (according to KT, that is).

The Spider Explained

At first glance, the KT Spider looks, acts, and feels like a smartphone. But KT provides options – lots of options – that can turn this smartphone into a docking maniac. You see, you can dock the Spider to KT’s tablet to turn it into a tablet, or you can choose the gaming console or the laptop option.

You can also choose all three options if you want a smartphone that does it all. For many, this may sound like the phone to beat all other smartphones, and it might be. But, there’s one problem with a phone that tries to masquerade as other devices.

As history has taught us, smartphones that attempt to be anything other than a smartphone also tend to lack in one way or another. For example, a smartphone docking system may be a great phone, but it might not be such a strong laptop when docked as one. Time will tell if this is the case with the KT Spider, though reviews thus far are interesting.

Why You’d Want a KT Spider

There’s no doubt that the KT Spider will appeal to many people. After all, it is a smartphone, gaming console, laptop, and tablet all rolled into one. But, much like the combination television/DVD players that once lined store shelves, the Spider might be something to seriously consider prior to purchase. Sure, this device may work as advertised, but you might be better off buying all of these devices separately (from different companies).

If you really want a device that can transition from a smartphone into almost anything else, the Spider might be your best bet. Reviewers who have been lucky enough to play with the new KT Spider believe that this will be a strong smartphone. If not for any other reason, you might be tempted to purchase this smartphone based upon its phone features. Some of those features include a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU and a high resolution screen.

If you live in Korea, you can expect the Spider to hit store shelves in time for the holiday season.
