LG has gone out on a very long and slightly silly limb with the new Aka phones. The phones have eyes, names, and personalities. And, no, the Aka phones aren’t for kids. These are adult smartphones that aim to draw in users by reaching an emotional level by connecting an object and human emotion - a level that only Ikea commercials have managed to do so far.

The Aka phones are the first phones to have faces, names, and other human-like features. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, here’s more about the new Aka lineup.

All About That Face

The new Aka phones have names. Wooky, YoYo, Soul, and Eggy are the phones that you can choose from, and each one has a different “face” of sorts. Eyes do poke over the edge of the phone’s sleeve, and it’s very easy to determine that they are, in fact, eyes. Not only do the phones have names and eyes, they also react to your hand movements. When you wave your hand in front of the front-facing camera, the eyes move with your hand movements - how’s that for treating your phone like a pet?

Oh, The Back Stories

Not only do these phones have faces, eyes that move when you wave your hand in front of them, and individual names, the Aka phones also have pretty well developed backstories. The LG team has hired people to create each of these stories, and you can read all about your phone when you buy it, or before you buy it, so that you can pick the one that you want. Underneath, the phones are really just like any other adult smartphone, but it’s the storylines and the eyes that really set the LG phones apart.

Of course, LG’s main goal with these phones is to sell accessories for the phones. You can buy cases and other things to make your phone stand out, or to take care of it - however you want to look at it, really. These phone characters also have Instagram accounts, and you can actually take a selfie with the phone and post it to an Instagram account. This may seem like a really whacky idea, but LG hopes to sell a lot of these phones in its Korean target market - the phones may or may not come to North America.

Hardware Specs

So, what do you get with a phone that has a face, name, and backstory? The Aka phones come with a 5-inch 720p display, Android OS, 8-megapixel back facing camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, a 1.2GHz Quad Core CPU, 16GB of storage (you can expand that to 128GB), 1.5GB of RAM, and the phones each have a unique color ranging from yellow to pink.

The design of the phone borderlines cute and sporty, and it’s kind of fun to look at too. This is LG’s first foray into a phone market that’s really unconventional, but it looks like the Aka phones are going to be a lot of fun for anyone that’s looking for something completely unique. The price has been set at 500,000 Wen, and the phone may or may not reach North American markets soon. If you love the idea of this phone, hang tight for an update when it happens.
