In the exercise and fitness world, January means a lot of new gym memberships and exercise omens. But what if you don’t want to join a gym? What if you just want to work out at home or outside without the hiring a trainer or paying a steep gym membership?

You can get in shape on your own and at your own speed with some of the newest fitness apps to hit the market, and many of these apps really do work if you follow them completely.

Here are some apps that you’ll want to check out if exercise is part of your New Year’s resolution.

FitStar Yoga

Yoga is a calm and relaxing way to do what most of us never bother to do - stretch out your muscles and entire body. While yoga might seem like an easier version of stretching, most yoga poses challenge your core, and are really tough to do. If you want to build a strong and toned body, yoga is one exercise that you should add to your routine.

FitStar Yoga is a free iOS app that learns your yoga level as you move through the app. You simply note whether each move was too easy or too hard, and the app adjusts to your feedback. If you want a completely customized experience, you can subscribe to the FitStar app for $30 per year. It really depends on how much of a personalized experience you’re after, but $30 per year is much more affordable than any yoga studio membership!

Couch to 5K

Have you always wanted to run a 5K, but your version of running is moving back and forth from the fridge to the couch? If that sounds like you, Couch to 5K is an app that you’ll want to check out. As the name of the app suggests, this app will get you from the couch to running your first 5k in no time. By using the app for 20-30 minutes a few times per week, you should be able to run that 5k at the end of 9 weeks without incident. Aside from joining a running group, this app provides the simplest way to get towards your goal of a 5k quickly - available on iOS and Android.

Seven

Do you think that you could work out for just seven minutes per day? This sounds easy, right? Well, the Seven app challenges you to do one strenuous activity (like push ups) for seven minutes per day. The goal here is to work as hard as you can at that one activity during those seven minutes. If you really push it, you will see the sweat start to pour. This app wants you to work out for seven minutes every single day for seven months. This may sound easy, but trust me when I say that Seven is a challenge! Seven is available on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.

Gym Genius

If you do want to pick up a new gym membership, this is a handy app that will help you track your progress at the gym. It’s a good idea to record the weights that you use each time as well as how you were feeling each day, and this is what Gym Genius does. This is more of an app that you can use to keep track of existing workouts instead of an app that gives you workouts, so keep this in mind. Gym Genius works with iOS devices only.
