Samsung has just released the ultimate summertime smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is waterproof, and can snap photographs under water - just in time for your vacation. Sound good? Need a phone that's rugged, ready for fun, and waterproof? One that works well too? Read on!

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Specs

Samsung's newest phone in the Galaxy series is waterproof up to one meter. You can use this phone underwater for up to 30-minutes at a time. That means that you can duck under water, snap a photo, and rise to the surface without ruining your smartphone.

The S4 runs on Android's 4.2 Jelly Bean, comes with a 1.9GHz quad-core processor, and has Samsung's trademarked TouchWiz interface. You'll also get an 8-megapixel camera that can shoot underwater - did I mention that this phone is waterproof? Yes? Well, that's one heck of a feature!

If you purchase this phone, you can do away with rugged Otterboxes and other cases that attempt to save a phone from destruction. But, this phone feels somewhat gimmicky too.

Why The Galaxy S4 Is A Good Idea Temporarily

Samsung wants to release this phone on June 21st, which will put it right in line with the summer season. It's clear to see why Samsung is aiming for summer fun (after all, it's a waterproof phone), but you'll get a downgrade when it comes to the phone's camera, and you'll also be stuck in a contract. Granted, AT&T is poised to offer this phone for $100, but you'll still have to deal with that contract after the summertime has gone.

In short: make sure you love this phone if you wan to buy it. Sure, it's going to be a lot of fun this summer to snap photos underwater, but don't purchase the S4 for this reason only. There are underwater cameras that do the same trick. Purchase the phone, instead, for the other things it offers - like a display that's nicely designed, or an overall design look that you love.

Additional Specs to Come

So far, Samsung is teasing consumers with a great video that showcases the new phone, a tall glass of water, and the viewer shock that comes with watching that phone being dropped into the water. Don't worry, the phone will be fine! But, Samsung hasn't release full details yet. I'm hoping that this phone is more than just a fun phone to play around with during a pool party, but we'll have to wait and see.

If Samsung manages to combine a nicely designed phone with great features, amazing specs, and other details, the S4 might just be the rugged phone you've been waiting for. I'll keep you posted on the dirty details as Samsung releases them.
